Beste Arne. Ik ben benieuwd wat jij van dit gebouw vindt. Dit is het station van Leiden uit 1953 van Schelling. Schelling, overigens ook de architect van het Amstelstation, heeft na de oorlog een serie sobere, statige stations zonder versiering gebouwd. De stations hebben een klassiek monumentaal karakter. Met grote bordestrappen, een luifel ondersteund door kolommen en een klokkentoren om het station te markeren.
Maar tegelijkertijd zijn veel ‘moderne ideeën’ en technieken in het stations verwerkt. De plattegronden zijn helder en functionalistisch met gescheiden ingang en uitgang voor vertrekkende en aankomende reizigers. Schelling bouwde zijn gebouwen met prefab betonnen elementen met een vaste moduulmaat. Het beton bleef onbehandeld en de enige vorm van decoratie zijn de betonnen opengewerkte claustrawanden (althans ik geloof dat de panelen zo heten, kheb geen internet). In Leiden heeft hij wel baksteeninvullingen binnen het grid. De stations waren geïnspireerd op Perret en Honegger. Dus daar ben ik nu ook wel benieuwd naar.
‘Ook in het uitwendige van het gebouw moeten vooral soberheid en ingetogenheid blijken. Als voornaamste herkenningsteken kan slecht een ranke klokketoren worden gevoegd, teken dat zicht daar een station bevindt, aanrakingspunt tussen stad en spoorbaan. Ik heb mij getracht – volgens bovengenoemde uitgangspunten aan de mijn toevertrouwde stations een eigen vorm en uitdrukking te geven gebaseerd op eenvoud, waarheid, zuiverheid en harmonie.‘
‘Een station moet mijn inziens in de allereerste plaats een zo duidelijk en overzichtelijk mogelijke ontvangstruimte zijn, waarbij niet de omvang van de hal, maar zijn openheid en zijn kontakt met de omgeving de nadruk moet krijgen. Daarom is het gewenst om de borstweringen te vermijden en het glas tot aan de vloer door te trekken. Een middel om het kontakt binnen – buiten te accentueren is het aanbrengen van ver vooruitspringende luifels, ondersteund door rhytmisch geplaatste zuilen die de bouwkunstige expressie zeer verhogen.’

Dit zijn twee foto’s in het ministerie van financien in Den Haag. Het is ontworpen door Jo Vegter en Mart Bolten en gebouwd in 1975. Volgens wikipedia is dit het voorbeeld van het Brutalisme in Nederland. Momenteel wordt het gerenoveerd, maar de betonofoben in ons land vinden natuurlijk dat het gesloopt moet worden. Stelletje architectuuranalfabeten zijn het. De ruimtelijke opzet rond een mooie grote binnentuin en het gegoten beton in de binnenruimten zijn erg goed. Door de structuur van de houten bekisting is het beton geen abstracte schaalloze massa. Ik denk dat veel mensen problemen met beton hebben vanwege het ontbreken van schaal in combinatie met de grauwe grijze kleur. Beton is natuurlijk het materiaal dat abstracte ideeen over massa en ruimte het beste kan verwezelijken. Maar misschien zijn gebouwen meer dan dit.
Er moeten grenzen aan beton worden gesteld. Door een combinatie van beton met andere materialen (kleuren) bijvoorbeeld. Of juist de toepassing van het materiaal bij kleinere objecten. Louis Kahn heeft ooit een betonnen kast gemaakt. Omdat er geen wapening nodig was kon het beton heel dun worden toegepast. Ik zal kijken of ik hier nog een foto van kan vinden.
Deze post was eigenlijk voornamelijk bedoelt als als referentie voor enkele van jou projceten, maar dan achteraf. Een voor het laatste project, met ruimten in muren. Hier is de muur zo’n anderhalve meter diep. Ik weet niet of er binnenin leidingsschachten zijn. Is iig de enige logische verklaring die ik kan bedenken voor die diepte. Het werkt wel goed als overgang tussen twee ruimten. De rechterfoto is van het relief in het beton, voor je gevel van Msc1. Diepte verschil is zo’n twee-en-een-halve cm. Ziet er goed uit in het echt. Op de foto’s is het minder duidelijk. Wanneer je ooit in de buurt ben, ga eens kijken op de eerste verdieping.
